It was more than 250 years ago
when the Lac du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Chippewa made this lush, lake-dotted
Wisconsin north woods their home. Interestingly enough, these names come
from outside their language of origin. Chippewa
is the English adaptation of the actual tribe name Ojibwe, while Lake of the Torches comes from the
French Lac du Flambeau. For this is what French explorers observed when
they happened upon this community: the sight
of flames on the lake from the birch bark torches used when harvesting fish.
Tranquil
Lake Pokegama and deep, dark luxuriant woods: you can just imagine the view from the
beautiful hotel, overlooking it all.
Lake of the
Torches Resort Casino: the Casino with an outside. |
